LinkedIn Profile Optimization for a Higher Google Ranking

Social media is a great and easy way to push positive content higher in the Google ranking. LinkedIn is one of them and ranks better than most other sites when you search for a name on Google. Of course – a site with your first and last name in the URL would rank better. But this would also take more time and effort to rank than for your LinkedIn profile.

Having a LinkedIn profile but it’s not showing on the first page of Google

As LinkedIn is well known, many people already have their personal or business profile. But it is not always showing up on the first page of Google. If that is your case, it is time to start optimizing your profile.

We gathered some tips from our own experience and from LinkedIn itself.Settings_Public_Profile


#1. Change your settings to a ‘public profile.’

Go to your profile settings. At the right side, you will have the ability to customize your profile settings, as shown in the image on the right. Make sure you select every profile item to show to everyone to give Google more content to crawl.


#2. Customize your URL with your keyword – business (name) etc. – in the URL

To do customize your URL you can go directly to your profile settings or visit your LinkedIn profile. Underneath your profile header – with your photo and profile summary – your current URL shows. Click on the editing symbol and a new window will open. On the right side, you can edit your URL as in the image below.

Make sure you add your keyword to this URL. This will probably be either your first and last name or your business name. Keep it clean; no numbers or symbols. If your name is already taken by someone else, add a hyphen (-) or any other symbol between your first and last name.

#3. Add content to every item on your profile

Your profile exists out of numerous components. To have a complete profile, make sure you add a portfolio, skills, recommendations, etc.

This makes your profile look more professional, but better yet: it is a great way to get Google’s attention. Giving skill endorsements and recommendations and receive them from others brings traffic to your profile. On top of that, it brings a link from the other person to your own profile, which sends a signal to Google that you are ‘relevant’. But keep in mind; be real. Don’t just give endorsements and recommendations to whoever- make sure it makes sense. Think of a colleague, business partner, client, etc.


#4. Add Slideshare presentations / Youtube video’s

Slideshare presentations are an excellent way to share presentations with your connections and refer them to your Slideshare account. This increases your Slideshare account traffic at the same time (WIN!). This blog from LinkedIn explains how to do this.

The same principle goes for Youtube. If you have a good Youtube channel which you want to promote, embed a relevant Youtube video to your LinkedIn posts. Here is how to do this.


#5. Build a Network – Connect with other relevant LinkedIn members

LinkedIn advises having at least one connection. Having connections ensures you that Google will notice and crawl your profile. But the more, the merrier. It’s a great way to share your message and information with your network. Which brings us to the next tip.


#6. Share relevant articles with your network

If you go to LinkedIn, you will see a timeline. This timeline shows everything people in your network shared with their network. At the top of the timeline you have the ability to post articles, share updates and photo’s etc.


Regularly posting articles, updates and insights increases your profile traffic and also gives Google more content to crawl.


#7. Keep your profile current by updating frequently

Google regularly review LinkedIn profiles for new and updated public profile information to show in the search results. So you need to keep your profile up to date and share content with others. This gives your LinkedIn profile more traffic which in return makes you appear higher within LinkedIn


#8. Linking your Content

To finish off your work and get Google’s attention; start linking inbound and outbound. Inbound links link to your profile. These links can be from other LinkedIn profiles or even outside of LinkedIn. Outbound links are the ones that you include in your content and links to other profiles or website. This outbound linking is also a great way to promote your other websites and channels. You can add links to by sharing posts, giving recommendations and endorsements, sharing on social media, etc.
